In England, the key government fee is the Office of the Public Guardian registration fee; solicitor fees are separate and set by the market. A Lasting Power of Attorney is an England-and-Wales document, not the name of the equivalent arrangement in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

How much does a Lasting Power of Attorney cost?

A Lasting Power of Attorney costs £92 to register with the Office of the Public Guardian from 17 November 2025, so registering both types costs £184 before any solicitor’s fee. That £92 figure is the current fee: the 2025 fees order says the LPA registration fee changed “from £82 to £92,” and GOV.UK now says, “Applying to register an LPA costs £92.” If you want both a health and welfare LPA and a property and financial affairs LPA, GOV.UK states: “If you want both a personal welfare LPA and a property and affairs LPA, it will cost £184 in total.” A solicitor charge for Power of Attorney is not fixed by law; the Solicitors Regulation Authority says, “We are not interfering in what firms charge, that is a matter for you, your clients and market competition.” As market examples, one solicitor quotes £360 including VAT for one LPA, while the SRA’s 2022 review found “the average price for an LPA was £466 plus VAT.” If the donor’s income before tax is under £12,000 a year, GOV.UK says “you’ll only have to pay half.” An LPA is legally binding only in England and Wales; Scotland has a Power of Attorney registration fee of £99 per person from 1 April 2026, and Northern Ireland uses an Enduring Power of Attorney, with a £189 fee from 1 April 2026.

How much does a solicitor charge to certify a copy of a power of attorney?

A solicitor commonly charges about £24 to £30 to certify a paper copy of a power of attorney, but the cheapest valid route is that the donor can certify their own registered LPA copy free while they still have mental capacity. GOV.UK says, “You can confirm that a copy of your registered lasting power of attorney (LPA) is genuine by ‘certifying’ it if you’re still able to make your own decisions.” The law names who can sign the certificate, including “the donor of the power or by a solicitor,” but it does not set a solicitor’s price. That is why solicitor charges to certify a power of attorney vary: Ann McCabe Solicitors says, “We charge £24 including VAT to certify a paper copy of the Lasting Power of Attorney,” while Powell Eddison says, “Certified copy Lasting Powers of Attorney are £30 per copy.” Do not confuse that with an OPG office copy: the Public Guardian says, “Office copies are available and cost £35 for an LPA,” which is a separate government copy service, not a solicitor certification fee.
